LTCC Intensive Course. Numerical Relativity by Dr Katy Clough. 15 and 16 February 2023

The LTCC is offering an Intensive Course on Numerical Relativity by Dr Katy Clough, Queen Mary University, on 15 and 16 February 2023.

Numerical Relativity Poster. Intensive course. February 2023

COURSE NAME: Numerical Relativity

LECTURER: Dr Katy Clough, School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University.

TIME: From Wednesday 15 Feb (1pm to 5pm) to Thursday 16 Feb (9am to 1pm)

VENUE: Room 500, 5th Floor, Department of Mathematics, 25 Gordon Street, UCL, London, WC1H 0AY

SUMMARY: In this course we will use a simple python code called BabyGRChombo to illustrate the concepts of numerical relativity - the solution of the Einstein Equation of general relativity on a computer. Such simulations are instrumental in interpreting the signals from gravitational wave detections of merging binary black holes, and are also a good example of the techniques employed in the numerical solution of coupled non-linear partial differential equations.
PREREQUESITIVES: A basic knowledge of python will be an advantage, and students should have a python installation including Jupyter Notebooks installed on their laptops before attending the course (see https://jupyter.org). It is recommended that students attend Juan Valiente Kroon’s LTCC course on Mathematical Topics of General Relativity, or read the notes available online, but it should still be possible to follow the course with a basic knowledge of general relativity such as that obtained from an undergraduate course.
Participants are asked to register by emailing: office@ltcc.ac.uk

The London Taught Course Centre’s Intensive Courses are freely open to all PhD students in the Mathematical Sciences in the UK and outside, subject to suitable space being available. The course will run within a 24 hour period.
