Audit and Non-member Policy

A student who has sought permission (before the start of an LTCC course) and has been allowed to audit that course will be able to attend the classes but will not be assessed, and this course will not bear any credits for that student.

Please read LTCC's policy regarding auditing and attendance by non-PhD students or students from non-member institutions. The LTCC member institutions are listed here.

  • Auditing by PhD students from member departments is not normally allowed and there would need to be a strong case made. Rather than audit, students should normally ask their departments whether they can take an additional module and register as usual if approved. The student can also try a module and if a student only attends 1 lecture then it will not be counted (the student should deregister, if they registered in this case, and if they keep the module, they should register if they did not do so previously).

  • Non-PhD students from member departments are allowed to register for courses provided the Director of Graduate Studies of their member department has agreed for them to be treated in the same manner as a PhD student from the member department for the purposes of counting attendance (as used in working out the departmental contribution). Again, auditing is not normally allowed and there would need to be a strong case.
  • Students from non-member departments but at the same institution as a member department are similarly allowed to register for courses provided the Director of Graduate Studies of the member department has agreed for them to be treated in the same manner as a PhD student from the member department for the purposes of counting attendance. A long-term arrangement of this nature should be approved by the Directors.
  • If a non-member department wants to send a student to the LTCC as a “taster” or as a special request, we may consider allowing this as a courtesy on a one-off basis, but the request should come from a person in authority, such as head of graduate studies or higher, and be addressed to the Directors.
  • Where non-member departments want to send students more regularly, they may be allowed to do this and pay a course fee per student, as with private individuals, but those institutions would be encouraged to join the LTCC consortium as full members.
  • Private individuals can be accepted if there is space, and would have to pay the standard module fee rate for that year. We would note affiliations if any, and monitor numbers from the same institution if applicable.
